De acordo com a lenda, Xangô era o rei de Òyó – região que hoje é a Nigéria – e possuía um caráter autoritário e violento, além de ser extremamente viril, atrevido, vaidoso e justiceiro.
Conhecido por praticar uma justiça dura, justa e cega, como uma rocha – que aliás é outro elemento que o representa: a rocha.
